Ladylike: Stories of Breaking the Rules, Living Out Loud and Claiming Your Space

Let’s talk about what ‘ladylike’ really means. This month, you’ll hear from women who are unapologetically themselves — breaking the rules, making their own way and redefining what it means to take up space. It’s bold, it’s brave and it’s a celebration of all the ways we’re claiming our power.

💫 Our Performer Line-up

Team 20s: Grace Zhang is a Melbourne-based comedian, actor, writer and content creator. A rising star of the local scene, she’s performed at Comedy Republic, Easey’s and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Her work blends outrageous personal stories, sharp Gen Z commentary and offbeat ideas that leave you wondering, ‘genius or ridiculous?’

Team 30s: Kru Harale is a Melbourne-based comedian whose vivacious energy crackles through her routine, as she describes her stories about Indians, Australia and globe-trotting. As seen on ABC’s Win The Week, she’s performed with Kitty Flanagan, Dave O’Neil and Anne Edmonds, starred in A Star is Torn, featured in Breast of the Fest and produces Melbourne’s sold-out Asian Comedy Showcase and Comedy Roulette.

Team 40s: Emma McMillan is a former dance and drama teacher turned entrepreneur who loves a good story. Emma works as a copywriting coach and small-business mentor, building writing confidence and capacity in others. Her long-running podcast Not Just About Copy blends actionable marketing tips with insightful small business conversations.

Team 50s: Annie Lawson is a journalist/ business editor and author of the bestselling Stoic At Work and Stoic in Love: Ancient wisdom to make dating, domestic boredom and breakups a bit less terrible. She applied Stoic wisdom to the modern world of being in love, out of love, lovesick, love-bombed or just love-tired. Romance and its rocky pursuit often sucks but, fortunately, not always, and Stoics can help with getting together, staying together, or moving on. Her books have been published in the UK, US, Spain, Korea, Greece and more.

Team 60s: Peta Murray is a Naarm-based playwright turned late-blooming academic. She writes extravaganzas with preposterous titles, coins new words, collaborates on loopy approaches to memoirs, diaries and performable essays, and leads a staff choir called Hot Holler. Peta is a faux-Scot with too many hobbies, one dog, and several alter-egos.

Team 70s: Kate Rowe:  Pommy by birth, Aussie by choice, ageing lesbian feminist, 78er, clean and sober 48 years, childhood sexual abuse and rape survivor, travel adventurer, health and exercise nut, retired triathlete, ukulele player, tactless direct talker and all-round pain in the butt with a sense of humour.  She recently published her memoir, How the fuck would I know?.

About Generation Women

Generation Women is a global storytelling movement that celebrates women’s voices across the decades.

Founded in New York in 2017, Generation Women launched in Sydney in 2018 and Melbourne in 2020. Every show features six storytellers — one from each decade of life, from her 20s to her 70s+ — sharing original stories on a shared theme.

Why Generation Women Australia?
