Generation Women Australia: On The Road - Wollongong

TICKETS AVAILABLE NOW

Behind every story of strength, there’s often someone who helped us find it, a friend, a mentor, or even a stranger. These stories explore the people and connections that lift us up, and the surprising ways they shape who we become.

This November, Generation Women Australia: On the Road comes to Wollongong with a powerful line-up of six local Illawarra women — in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s+ — stepping on stage to share stories of strength, connection, and courage.

Through laughter, tears and truth-telling, you’ll hear how community and relationships can transform us — and be reminded that none of us has to face life alone.

Expect to laugh. Expect to cry. And expect to leave with a deeper sense of the ties that hold us together, and the strength we gain from one another.

This special event is proudly presented in partnership with West Street Centre and funded by Create NSW.

Generation Women Melbourne — Showstoppers 2025: The stories that stayed with us

Tickets available now

Every Generation Women night delivers unforgettable moments. For our final show of the year, we’re bringing back six storytellers whose words truly stopped the show, sparking laughter, tears and goosebumps long after the night ended. This is a celebration of the stories that defined our year and the ones our community couldn’t stop sharing.

If you missed a few shows (or just want to relive the highlights), this is your chance. You’ll leave with a heart full of showstoppers and a fresh reminder of why telling our stories out loud matters.

💫 Our Performer Line-up:

Team 20s: Skye Cusack is a Dulgubarra-Yidinji and Indonesian writer who has somehow made a career out of ‘constructive complaining’ — otherwise known as activism. Skye founded the creative advocacy agency Project Loudly, is a reporter for the ABC and is working with the publisher Magabala Books to develop a fiction manuscript.

Team 30s: Shyaire Ganglani is a slam poet and comedian with a knack for spinning her emotional baggage into comedy gold. She’s performed in Edinburgh, Europe, Dubai and all over Australia. She is a mentor for The Aunties, Assisterhood and D&AD Shift, and her comedy and activism work has been featured on 3ZZZ and Triple R radio, and Today.

Team 40s: Nadia Mahjouri is a writer, counsellor, group facilitator and mother from Hobart/nipaluna. Her debut novel, Half Truth, was published by Penguin Random House in February 2025. Nadia hosts the podcast The Whole Truth: Motherhood and the Writing Life, about how writers keep creating in the messy muddle of family life.

Team 50s: Maha Sidaoui is a Lebanese-Australian writer who mines her cultural confusion, sexuality and poor life choices for stories. Her work has been published by Hardie Grant and featured on the Memoria podcast. She writes about belonging, not belonging, and all the deeply uncomfortable moments that come with pretending you do.

Team 60s: Peta Murray is a Naarm-based playwright turned late-blooming academic. She writes extravaganzas with preposterous titles, coins new words; collaborates on loopy approaches to memoirs, diaries and performable essays; and leads a staff choir called Hot Holler. Peta is a faux-Scot with too many hobbies, one dog and several alter egos.

Team 70s: Katrina Watson has just turned 70, a fact she finds hard to accept gracefully. She’s a retired but not retiring doctor, and a born-again writer.

Generation Women Sydney — Her Wisdom, Her Way

BOOK November - FINAL SHOW OF THE YEAR

Life throws curveballs at all of us. Some knock us flat, some we laugh off, but every one leaves us a little wiser. This October, six women, from their 20s through to their 70s+, step on stage to share the real stories of how they’ve faced life’s curveballs: the lessons, the laughs and the wisdom that kept them going. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. And you’ll leave with the reminder our community comes back for every month: when women share their stories, you walk away feeling stronger than you ever thought possible.

The event is supported by City of Sydney for Mental Health Awareness Month.

💫 Our Performer Line-up:

Team 20s - Shayne de Groot is lezzo and probably non-binary... but is also non-committal. They grew up on the far south coast of NSW, on unceded Yuin Country. Their work is grounded in queerness and mental health advocacy.

Team 30s - Kersherka Sivakumaran is a director and producer of live theatre dedicated to telling stories that normalise the inclusion of Australian migrants in the national narrative. Her storytelling journey began in 1997 with the Indian classical dance form Bharathanatyam, shaping a lifelong commitment to art that bridges cultures and communities.

Team 40s - Cristina de Mello is a psychosocial support worker and currently completing a Masters of Psychotherapy and Counselling at Western Sydney University. After a brief stint as a Performance artist and 15 years as a Classical ballet teacher, a few “curve balls” sent her on a new path exploring how being lovingly seen and heard can heal.

Team 50s - Trish Speers is a certified Intimacy Professional and Mental Health Practitioner whose journey has been shaped by both loss and love. Drawing on her background in film, theatre, and healing, she supports others in finding safety, courage, and resilience through compassion and genuine human connection.

Team 60s - Dixie Link-Gordon is a proud Gooreng Gooreng woman and Aunty In Residence of Full Stop Australia & Women's & Girls Emergency Centre. Team 70s - Sharyn McGee is a retired university lecturer and sociologist, and a long-serving board member of WayAhead Mental Health Association NSW, where she has served since 2006. Generation Women Sydney — Bridging the Divide: Stories of unexpected connections

Does it feel harder to connect these days? You’re not alone. In a world that often feels busy and divided, it can be hard to find those real, human moments of connection. That’s where Generation Women comes in. Six incredible women — from their 20s through to their 70s+— step on stage to share true stories of connection that changed everything. From unexpected friendships to cultural encounters that opened new doors, each story will remind you that connection is possible, even when it feels out of reach.

You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. And you’ll leave with that little spark we all crave: the feeling that you’re not alone, and that together, we’re stronger.

💫 Our Performer Line-up:

Team 20s: Chelsea Hendra is an entrepreneur and footballer, aiming to tackle tough topics in sports through workshops and empower athletes and their supporters via her business, Change Makers.

Team 30s: Diana McLaren is a comedian, writer, event MC and all-around artist. Sometimes introduced as the queen of oversharing, she is known for always sharing her truth with kindness, love and humor.

Team 40s: Dr Fatma Al-widyan is an entrepreneur, educator and innovation leader empowering the next generation of engineers at UTS through hands-on projects tackling big challenges — from electric cars to space exploration. Passionate about inclusive pathways into STEM, Fatma champions creativity, collaboration and opportunities for underrepresented voices to shape the future of engineering.

Team 50s: Lisa Ireland is an author, podcaster and writing mentor. Her eighth novel, The Studio Girls, was published in May 2024. Lisa is a co-host of Writers Behaving Badly, a podcast that encourages listeners to let go of fear and embrace their creativity.

Team 60s: Dr Leda van der Post is a writer, artist and facilitator. Through both her personal art and her Creative Journey workshops, she invites people to use creative expression to shift how they see themselves and the world around them. Whether through painting, storytelling or guiding others, her work is grounded in curiosity, courage and care.

Team 70s: Karen Lindley AM has forged a remarkable dual career, becoming the first female gemologist to wholesale Australian black opal globally while dedicating over two decades to supporting survivors of child sexual assault. Her leadership in industry boards and her advocacy have earned her an Order of Australia for service to both the jewellery trade and social welfare.

Let’s talk about what “ladylike” really means. This month, you’ll hear from women who are unapologetically themselves — breaking the rules, making their own way, and redefining what it means to take up space. It’s bold, it’s brave, and it’s a celebration of all the ways we’re claiming our power.

💫 Our Performer Line-up

Team 20s: Ella Frost has always believed in questioning institutional thinking. She is simply unable to not speak up when dominant narratives don't make sense. Keenly aware of social injustice and inequity, she feels like she has found her path in the field of Occupational Therapy where she currently supports people living with disabilities while she completes her degree.

Team 30s: Naomi Koh Belic is a second-generation Australian and a first-generation university graduate with a PhD in stem cell biology. She is passionate about making science accessible and amplifying voices of minority communities. She is the creator of the health series Bimbo Biology Body Breakdown, the science drag show The Drag Experiment, and co-creator of the matchmaking experiment Love Lab. Dr Naomi was also a presenter and producer at ABC and a biology expert on Discovery Channel.

She is a correspondent for Monocle, a columnist with the Lowy Institute's The Interpreter, and contributes to various other local and foreign media outlets. Team 50s: Over a career of more than 30 years in book publishing, Lou Johnson has worked with hundreds of people to shape and share their stories. She still gets a fizz of excitement every day about the power of stories to bring us together.

She's created and led some of the most watched and influential TV shows on earth and her content has been watched more than 8 billion times.

Team 70s: Born and bred in Melbourne, Dasha Ross is a journalist, podcaster and lifelong rule-breaker. Her first book, Big Trouble Coming, is a comedy of life-threatening errors set in Sri Lanka, published by Valentine Press. Dasha is now settled amongst the mermaids, occasional sharks and human wannabes at Bondi Beach in Sydney.

She applied Stoic wisdom to the modern world of being in love, out of love, lovesick, love-bombed or just love-tired. Romance and its rocky pursuit often sucks but, fortunately, not always, and Stoics can help with getting together, staying together, or moving on. Her books have been published in the UK, US, Spain, Korea, Greece and more.

Team 60s: Peta Murray is a Naarm-based playwright turned late-blooming academic. She writes extravaganzas with preposterous titles, coins new words, collaborates on loopy approaches to memoirs, diaries and performable essays, and leads a staff choir called Hot Holler. Generation Women Melbourne — Failing Forward: Stories about mistakes

This April, we’re embracing life’s blunders. Join our incredible storytellers as they share hilarious mishaps that turned into valuable lessons. Let’s celebrate our shared humanity and the oops moments that remind us we’re all wonderfully human. Come ready to laugh and discover how owning our mistakes can lighten our load and bring us closer together!

Our performer line-up:

Team 20s: Mia Sherman is a curious, clever, ambitious, sometimes troubled, queer disabled twentysomething who works really damn hard every day to navigate a path through the jungle that is OCD. They find and spread joy through art, the outdoors, the study of history, food and connection. They live and work in Naarm.

Team 30s: Kara Huynh is a proud 31-year-old dog mum of two, wife and coach. As she continues trying to figure out what this thing called ‘life’ is supposed to mean, she embraces curiosity and resilience. Since the age of five, her vivid imagination has inspired her to explore, experiment and grow, embracing both success and failure along the way.

Team 50s: Heidi Catherine is an award-winning author of over thirty novels. With a current focus on domestic suspense stories, Heidi is fascinated by human interactions and relationships, using ‘research’ as her excuse for watching too much reality TV.  She lives in Melbourne with her husband, two sons and a feisty rescue chihuahua.

Team 60s: Kristine Philipp began life in Melbourne 1960. At fifteen she became an office chick, surviving administrative work on and off for the next forty years. At age 55, Kristine transformed into a volunteer stand-up comedian and unemployable old punk author. Her memoir Girl Friday: An extraordinarily ordinary working life was published in 2024.

Team 70s+: Bea Toews was born and trained as a teacher in Canada before emigrating to Australia in 1971. She has taught internationally in Thailand, Malaysia and Russia. Generation Women Melbourne - Plot Twist: Stories You Never Saw Coming

Sometimes, life throws you a curveball. This September, get ready to hear six performers from the deaf/hard of hearing and deaf/blind community share stories of change. New paths can be invigorating and exciting, or confusing and downright scary. Regardless, the only constant in life is change, so come hear a night of stories about forging your own path, wherever that path takes you.

Our performer line-up:

Team 20s: Nyanakuek Kuol, also known as Anna, is originally from South Sudan and is studying for a BA in Psychology, with a special passion for helping deaf individuals with mental health issues. She is also a disability support worker, currently working on a project to support deaf migrants. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, being in nature, hiking, going to the beach and spending time with loved ones.

Team 30s: Julia Murphy is a qualified Teacher of the Deaf, working in early education, and is also a certified deaf interpreter. Deaf from birth, her first language is Auslan (Australian Sign Language). Her passion lies in language development and empowering young deaf and hard of hearing children to discover their identities. She also loves travel, nature, sport and the Carlton Blues.

Team 40s: Catherine Miller is from a deaf family in Hobart. She grew up with both Auslan and English and was mainstreamed — an experience that significantly shaped her perspective on life and who she is. Catherine then moved to the mainland to become a teacher of the deaf. Catherine became a parent for the first time in her late 30s, which was a delightful surprise. She moved away from education during that period and focused on supporting deaf children outside of the schooling sector as well as working as a policy writer for Deaf Australia, and hasn’t looked back.

Team 50s: Joanna Agius OAM is a profoundly deaf and proud Narungga woman with connections to the Kaurna, Ngarrindjeri and Wirungu nations in South Australia. A strong advocate for deaf and hard of hearing Aboriginal people in Australia, Joanne founded Deaf Aboriginal Services in 2020. She was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in 2020 for her contributions to people who are deaf or hard of hearing and to the deaf Aboriginal community.

Team 60s: Heather Lawson has been involved in the deaf community all her life. She was born deaf and Auslan is her first language.
