Generation Women Sydney — Showstoppers 2025: The stories that stayed with us

  • Generation Women Sydney 354 Bourke Street Surry Hills, NSW, 2010 Australia (map)
TICKETS AVAILABLE NOW

Every Generation Women night delivers unforgettable moments. For our final show of the year, we’re bringing back six storytellers whose words truly stopped the show, sparking laughter, tears and goosebumps long after the night ended. This is a celebration of the stories that defined our year and the ones our community couldn’t stop sharing.

If you missed a few shows (or just want to relive the highlights), this is your chance. You’ll leave with a heart full of showstoppers and a fresh reminder of why telling our stories out loud matters.

💫 Our Performer Line-up:

Team 20s: Shayne de Groot is lezzo and probably non-binary . . . but is also noncommittal. They grew up on the far south coast of NSW, on unceded Yuin Country. Shayne is a playwright whose works have been longlisted for the Griffin Award and the Martin Lysicrates Prize; their debut play dog was nominated for a Wayahead Mental Health Matters Award. Their work is grounded in queerness and mental health advocacy.

Team 30s: Dr Ashna Basu is an award-winning doctor, speaker and global advocate for gender equity. She works in Sydney’s public hospital psychiatry system and sits on the board of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatry.

Team 40s: Aarti Betigeri is a multi-platform journalist and former foreign correspondent based in Canberra. She is a correspondent for Monocle, a columnist with the Lowy Institute's The Interpreter, and contributes to various other local and foreign media outlets. She is the editor of 'Growing Up Indian In Australia', and spent almost a decade living in New Delhi, from where she reported across South Asia for publications around the globe.

Team 50s: Yumi Lee is the CEO of Older Women’s Network Australia (OWN) and has worked in communications, fundraising, advocacy and lobbying in Australia and abroad. As a peace and women’s rights activist for many years, and driven by a strong sense of social justice, Yumi is passionate about raising awareness of the issues of concern for older women and is also a proud member of Generation Women Australia’s Advisory Board.

Team 60s: Jeanie Faure is an artist and educator, and a volunteer at the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre. After earning graduate diplomas in Special Education and Student Welfare, she spent 30 years as a teacher, primarily in juvenile justice. For several years she was also the lead singer in a rock band called the Crown Julies. She enjoys painting and ceramics, and currently teaches painting classes.

Team 70s: Liem Bui is a retired engineer originally from Vietnam. After growing up during the Vietnam War, peace and freedom motivated her to build a boat and take her family on an unknown journey to a new life. They eventually settled in Sydney, where Liem completed an engineering degree and resumed her career. A single mother, she has been dedicated to giving her daughter a good education and raising her to be strong and independent.
